If your kids sat down to a couple of bits of toast smeared with Vegemite this morning, you’re about to feel some serious brekkie envy. What this dad can do with two bits of toast is nigh on mind-blowing, but it’s the reason behind his ‘crumby’ creations that will really melt your heart.
Most of us have tried to get creative with our kids’ food in the hope the meal will be eaten. Maybe a tomato sauce smiley face, or a broccoli tree forest (and we have previously featured some fabulous food creations)- but this British dad takes the cake for food flair with his toast sculptures. Adam Perry whips up breakfast for his two daughters every morning, but his youngest can only have white bread with sunflower oil spread because of her severe allergies.
Adam wanted to make brekkie a little more exciting for his girls, and the idea for toast sculptures was born earlier this year. “I decided to open an Instagram account dedicated to toast, just for fun, and vowed to my kids that I’d create something out of toast every morning for at least a year to make them smile, and that’s how it started!” Adam explained to abc7 News.
Initially the creations were mildly ambitious, from the London Eye to the Pyramids. But as the weeks have ticked by, Adam has honed his skills, crafting crabs and dinosaurs, the Statue of Liberty and his Rio Olympics-inspired breakfasts are particularly intricate.
Adam says that often he doesn’t know what he’s going to create, even as the bread is toasting, “but by the time the toast pops up, I’ve usually got something in mind, but more often than not, it’s my wife and kids that help with the ideas. I’ve tried to keep it irreverent and fun, and a wide range of interests, not just the stuff I like (music and soccer), and sometimes I’ll do something that’s current or in the news, but more often than not it’s just a reflection of what’s going on in our little bubble.”
Incredibly, this dad of two is able to sculpt and upload an image of his morning creation by the time the kettle boils, although he points out the family’s kettle is rather slow!
The professional musician (Adam is actually the Bloodhound Gang’s drummer!) hopes to make a coffee table book from his images, once he’s completed a year of toasty goodness. “It’s just a bit of fun, but when people, comment and say it’s brightened their day somehow it feels great, so I’m going to keep going and see where the toast takes me! I need suggestions though, so if anyone has any, please send them to me and I’ll try to build them!”
