I’ll admit that one of my favourite recipes from Annabel Karmel is ‘Easy One Pot Chicken’ – a delicious combination of sweet potato, carrot, onion and chicken. Let’s just overlook the fact that it’s a puree, made for babies.
Thank goodness Annabel Karmel has released Annabel’s Family Cookbook – delicious food that is truly intended for the whole family (no more sneaking spoonfuls of Easy One Pot Chicken!).
As a mother of three, Karmel knows that it is difficult to find dishes that the whole family will enjoy. She also understands that while we would all like the time to put our Cordon Bleu chef hats on, when it comes to dinner time, most nights we’re just too rushed or too tired. Or both.
In Annabel’s Family Cookbook, Karmel offers no-fuss, tasty recipes designed to get everyone around the table at the same time, whether they’re two years old or twenty. Hooray! No more feeling like a short-order cook as you prepare one thing for the kids and modify it for the more mature taste-buds.

The recipes focus on dishes that are quick to prepare using few, easy-to-find ingredients – try Sweetcorn and Broccoli Fritters or Honeyed Lamb Cutlets. They may be simple but each recipe is packed with flavour.
There’s also a section on food that can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the freezer or fridge (the Multi-layered Cottage Pie will become your weeknight best friend). Honestly, I feel like such a mum when I scan a new recipe and think to myself “But can I freeze it?” – however, busy days are so much easier when I can pull a meal out of the freezer, knowing that it’s nutritious and home-cooked.

The winners in our house? The Potato and Chicken Rosti, Nasi Goreng and the tasty Beef Enchiladas. For a sweet finish, the Peach, Raspberry and Apple Crumble is dessert perfection (what’s winter without a fruit crumble?!) and the Chocolate Rice Krispie Squares are easy party or lunch box treats.
Annabel’s Family Cookbook is available online directly from the publisher, Random House Books Australia.
