They say variety is the spice of life, but Jamie Oliver has landed himself in hot water over the very unusual way he disciplined one of his children.
The celebrity chef has admitted lacing 12-year-old daughter Poppy’s apple with a particularly hot chilli after she was “disrespectful” and “rude” to him.
The Daily Mail reports he told an audience at the BBC Good Food Show he pulled the stunt because it wasn’t “very popular beating kids any more”.
“Poppy was quite disrespectful and rude to me and she pushed her luck. In my day I would have got a bit of a telling-off but you are not allowed to do that. Five minutes later she thought I had forgotten and I hadn’t. She asked for an apple. I cut it up into several pieces and rubbed it with Scotch Bonnet and it worked a treat,” he is reported to have said.
His wife, Jules, was furious, and ordered him never to do it again – and child experts and the internet agree.
Victorian Commissioner for Children and Young People Bernie Geary says the trick is akin to “assault” and it is “not appropriate to use cruelty as a form of discipline”. “This bloke, he should realise the influence he has as a high-profile public figure and a high-profile father,” he tells Radio 3AW.
“If he’s joking it’s not even appropriate because some parents and families might think it’s a legitimate or alternative way of disciplining children. He’s way off the planet as far as I’m concerned.”
He has also copped a lot of heat on Twitter over his discipline tip. What do you think – did he go too far? Tell us below.
